freighting

after a lengthy assessment we have regrettably decided not to offer our freighting service in the spring & summer of 2010. The principal reason for this decision is the extraordinarily high transportation costs we now face

we intend to revive the service in the future but can only apologise to those students who had hoped to use our freighting services this year

however, to make life easier for you, below you will find some useful tips / hints on preparing for your journey home

costs

the cost of homeward-bound freighting is impossible to estimate as there are so many variables to consider:
  • where it is being collected from
  • how much it weighs (individual items and as a whole)
  • how big it is (the volume of individual items and as a whole)
  • whether you want it sent by air (quicker but more expensive) or by road/sea (slower but cheaper)
  • where you want it sent
estimates are based on either the actual weight or 'volumetric weight' of each item - whichever is the greater. For instance, a box of coursework books will cost more than the same box containing just a duvet / comforter. Volumetric weights are calculated using the formulas:

Domestic freight
Length x Width x Height in centimetres / 4000 = Volumetric Weight in kilograms

International freight
Length x Width x Height in centimetres / 6000 = Volumetric Weight in kilograms

Please note: no single item can weigh more than 25 kilograms and no single measurement can be larger than 1m (100cms). Heavy items can be freighted / shipped but you must check with the freighting company in advance. Big items become very expensive because of their 'volumetric weight' but again, you must check in advance

all items must be packed in appropriate boxes, crates or suitcases. Freighting companies will not accept un-packed items i.e. lamps, kettles, music-systems, student trophies (i.e. traffic-cones or road-signs) etc. See our notes below for more details

advice

planning ahead

  • measure and record the sizes (in centimetres) of the items you want to send home
  • use a set of bathroom scales to weigh and record the weight of each of the items you want freighted
  • email the freighting company for advice
  • confirm the dates for collection as far ahead as possible
  • arrange suitable insurance (see notes below)
packing up
  • be careful not to mistakenly pack any personal valuables which you might need (i.e. passport, travel documents, handbag, wallet, keys, PDA, etc.) (see notes below )
  • use proper sturdy double-walled storage boxes that will not collapse (see notes below)
  • pack items securely in the boxes and seal shut to avoid breakages / losses (baggage handlers worldwide are not renowned for their careful treatment of items!)
  • ideally, use the lockable / sealable crates supplied by All-Unied
  • spread heavy items amongst your luggage / boxes so that no pieces are overly heavy
  • wrap china and glass piece by piece. Put the heaviest items at the bottom and pad out corners and empty spaces
  • clearly mark / label all your boxes and cases with your name and home destination address
  • empty and dry out any rice-cookers, steamers, kettles, irons etc
items not allowed

you must not pack:
  • gas, petrol and other flammable items
  • lighters, batteries, aerosols and fireworks
  • perishable goods
  • any liquids
  • dangerous chemicals
  • live animals
  • or any goods of an illegal nature
you will be liable for any damage to any third-party property as a result of you packing the above items. Check the freighting company's Terms & Conditions

notes:

you must be ready for the driver when he comes to collect your possessions. If the driver has to wait while you finish packing (including the labelling of your items or repacking due to improper containers being used by you) or for any other reason, you will probably be charged extra

we strongly advise that you insure your property. It is your responsibility

once the freighting company has collected your items to be shipped / freighted home it will be exceeding difficult (or even impossible) to regain access to them. You must therefore be absolutely certain that you have not mistakenly packed any items (passport, etc.) you are likely to need before your items are delivered to your home

any items not packed in an appropriate way (for instance, a bin-liner of books) will not be accepted by the collection driver

freighting companies normally reserve the right to open and inspect any box / crate / container / suitcase (or other item) suspected of containing any disallowed items / goods / substances. Should this circumstance occur, they will not be liable for any damage caused to the container or goods held within
